Smithsonian NMAAHC — Make Good the Promises: Reconstruction and Its Legacies

The execution of this temporary exhibition at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington, D.C., demanded adaptive engineering and fast-paced execution. The primary structural challenge involved engineering the reuse of a complex, proprietary modular wall system from a previous exhibition, integrating new wall architectures, and managing high-density graphic and artifact layouts. Serving as a key technical detailer and coordinator, I managed the adaptive engineering, modular detailing, and multi-disciplinary fitment for the gallery path.

My Role & Key Execution Areas:

  • Modular System Adaptation & Engineering: Evaluated, detailed, and engineered the redeployment of a complex modular wall network, designing new custom infill wall sections to smoothly direct visitor traffic through the updated gallery layout.

  • High-Density Graphic & Component Layouts: Coordinated the precise alignment and cleat patterns for hundreds of custom graphic panels, ensuring seamless integration with pass-through artifact casework and multimedia monitor displays.

  • Archival Preservation Coordination: Managed the strategic layout, fitment, and installation coordination for repurposed high-security archival display cases to match new conservation requirements.

  • Scenic Fabrication Detailing: Spearheaded the detailing and engineering of the immersive "scenic church" environment, developing modular sub-assemblies that allowed for rapid, damage-free transit and efficient on-site installation while protecting high-end theatrical finishes.

Project Execution Impact

The NMAAHC temporary gallery proved the value of smart, adaptive execution. By reverse-engineering and modifying existing modular assets alongside brand new scenic elements, I helped deliver a deeply immersive, museum-grade environment on a highly compressed schedule, maximizing material reuse without compromising a single aesthetic or structural detail.
